Ecological, Sustainable & Local - the best kind of potatoes
Brought to you by two passionate PEI farm families, G Visser & Sons and Island Growers Co., we share a commitment to cultivating exceptional food sustainably. Since 1993, Eco Spuds have been proudly grown using eco-friendly practices.
At Eco Spuds, we're not just growing potatoes; we're nurturing a better future for our environment and our local community.
Pirmin Kummer - The Eco Spuds Founder
His vision to differentiate and desire to grow better food led to locally grown, sustainable, and eco-friendly potatoes, “Eco Spuds”.
Pirmin, and later along with his son Jonathan, grew Eco Spuds for over 30 years at Timber River Farms!
As Pirmin steps into retirement, he is passing his wealth of knowledge and experience onto us. We are proud and honored to carry on his legacy by continuing to grow and supply @Sobeys with Eco Spuds.
What are Eco-Spuds?
The land and the environment that we share with our community are at the heart of Eco Spuds. It is an ecological focus on production emphasising sustainable farming practices that prioritize reducing environmental impact, improving soil health, and the well-being of our local farming communities.
Eco Spuds are grown with the intentional focus on reduced fertilizer and chemical inputs. We are constantly striving to improve our practices and minimize inputs.
Soil Health and Biodiversity
Key to the whole concept is the commitment to building healthy soils. We employ practices such as crop rotation, and cover cropping to enhance soil fertility and structure. Crop rotation helps disrupt pest and disease cycles, while cover crops prevent soil erosion and improve nutrient cycling. By enriching the soil with organic matter, farmers foster a diverse microbial community, which is crucial for nutrient availability and overall plant health.
The Right Varieties
Eco Spuds are non-GMO. We emphasize the best adapted potato varieties, which plays a crucial role in ecological production. These varieties are chosen for greater resistance to diseases and pests, reducing the need for chemical interventions. Furthermore, cultivating robust and vigorous potatoes requires less fertilizer inputs and improves resilience against climate change and other environmental stresses.
Pest and Disease Management
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential to ecological potato farming. This holistic approach combines cultural practices, and minimal chemical interventions to manage pests. By monitoring pest populations and using solutions with the least environmental impact, we are reducing their impact on non-target species and the surrounding environment.
Challenges for us as Farmers
Growing Eco Spuds is not without its risks to us as farmers though. Since we are committed to reducing the environmental impact, we face more potential for lower yields and quality. We must be looking very far forward in our crop plans, choosing just the right fields, focusing on being pro-active to any arising issues, and blessed with the right conditions to make it all work. We just don’t have all the same tools in our tools box as regular potato production.
We are always pushing the limits when it comes to significantly reducing the chemical control methods. Weed control, for example, involves cultivation instead of spraying.
Cultivating Eco-Spuds to control weeds
This manages the weed pressure to some extent but is very timing sensitive. A stretch of wet weather at the wrong time can keep us out of the field and allow weeds to escape. The weeds are a real challenge in Eco Spud production. They grow quickly and compete with the potatoes of sunlight, water and nutrients, and make harvest more challenging.
Weeds competing for resources
There is also the ever-present concern of disease, in particular late blight. This is the same disease that triggered the Irish Potato Famine in the 1880’s and it is still a major threat today. Without the use of protectant products that prevent the onset of blight, potato fields are vulnerable and could be very quickly decimated by the disease if it is present. Strong healthy plants, and less susceptible varieties helps, but it is not a total solution.
Conclusion
Ecological potato production presents a viable pathway toward more sustainable agriculture. By prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, and environmental well-being, it offers a holistic approach that addresses the challenges of modern farming. As consumer demand for sustainably produced food continues to rise, ecological methods will play a crucial role in shaping the future of potato cultivation and broader agricultural practices. Embracing these principles not only benefits farmers and consumers but also helps safeguard the planet for future generations.
